Location

Halfway between Gauteng and the Natal coast lies the small town of Utrecht. Nestled in the Balale Mountains and completely enclosed in a game park, it is the ideal stop-over for one travelling between these places. The town is of historical interest in that it forms part of the Battlefields Route.

Paisley & Pomegranate is situated on the outskirts of town and many species visit the water trough at our front door to quench their thirst. Impala, zebra and wildebeest are regular visitors, while even warthog and kudu pay us the occasional visit.

Activities in the area include cycling, trout fishing, water-sport and game viewing. The local gholf course is in the game park along a stretch of river, beside the mountain range. The scenery is magnificent and though fenced off to protect the greens, the golfer is often keenly watched by curious impala and wildebeest.

Mixed farming is practised in the area including cattle-, sheep- and crop farming. However, more and more farmers have started stocking with game since the mid-nineties. With seams particularly rich in anthracite coal has been mined commercially in the area for more than a century.
